Winter Activities in Cook Forest: Cross Country Skiing, Sledding/Tubing, Ice Skating and Snomobiling

For those who enjoy winter activities, there is an ice skating pond approximately 1 mile from MacBeth's Cabins adjacent to the Clarion River along River Drive.  The pond is flooded each winter and maintained by the state.  The ice skating pond is also "lighted" for night skating and has a few areas surrounding it where fires can be built to warm up or roast hot dogs.  Skaters can enjoy a scenic view of the Clarion River in its winter splendor.

Adjacent to the skating pond is a steep slope, where areas have been cleared for sled riding and innertubing down the hill.

Cross country skiing is popular in the park during winter.  There are designated trails and cross country ski rentals nearby.  There are numerous other trails and back roads which are suitable for cross country skiing in the park and many miles of cross country ski trails in the Allegheny National Forest, most of which are not groomed.

Snomobiling is also popular when there is enough snow.  There are 20 miles of snowmobile trails in Cook Forest State Park.  In the past, the nearby town of Marienville has held snowmobile races. There are many winter designated snowmobile roads in this town.  Allegheny National Forest also has many back roads and trails open to snowmobilers.
